I Property Description:
Gracious turn-of-the-century Edwardian home lovingly maintained and updated. Set on
the shores of Lake Huron, this wonderful property offers a tranquil outdoor setting with
stunning waterfront views and beautiful gardens, complemented by a charming carriage
house and a potting shed/workshop. The main floor has formal living and dining rooms, a
library, and an updated kitchen that features a spacious pantry and opens to the sunroom,
a beautiful retreat with a walkout to a large two-tiered deck. The second floor has three
bedrooms and a family room which can serve as a fourth bedroom. Gleaming wood floors,
original oak woodwork and stained glass, contribute to the home’s elegance and warmth.
A separate staircase leads to a third-level, spacious attic (32’ x 32’) which can be
converted into living space. A finished basement, formerly the office of a local business,
offers multiple uses.
II Additional Material:
31 Taylor is an historic Edwardian brick home built at the turn of the last century by the
area’s local MPP. It is thought to be an Eaton’s or a Sears Roebuck Catalogue House and
certainly has the trademark quality of construction that suggests. These houses were not
prefabricated. Plans were purchased and the materials for building and finishing the house
were sent by rail from various sources including fir from British Columbia. This house is
one of the versions that was known as a foursquare house: there were four principal
rooms on each main floor. It retains its original Arts and Craft details including built-in
cabinetry, pocket doors, beautiful wood finishes, and stained glass. It also boasts its
original gracious porches, their insulating properties, and their quality wood construction.
The foundation of the home is stone and was built by the area’s Cornish miners, who also
built the local United Church.

The house was owned by the Grigg Family for two generations. Albert Grigg was the
provincial member of parliament and had the house built shortly after his marriage. His
son subsequently owned it and had his medical office in the main floor library. The walk-in
cedar closet that graces the attic is said to have been built by a local craftsman in payment
for Dr. Grigg’s services and the foyer floor shows charming evidence of its once being a
waiting room.
The home has been lovingly maintained and updated. Many light fixtures are
reconditioned antiques that date from the period of the house build. Wallpaper has
likewise been selected that matches the home’s history.
New built in bookcases and cabinets have been designed to match the home’s
architectural character. The kitchen boasts an original tin ceiling and has been updated but
still reflects the style of its heritage. The two full bathrooms have been updated but retain
their character with original and unique fixtures.
This home also offers substantial space for a new owner to make their own stamp: the
walk up attic is a magnificent space with stunning views and real potential and the
basement is open and bright and could be used in any number of ways.
The yard is extensive. It offers lovely views of Bruce Bay and Lake Huron, mature trees,
established perennial beds, a large organic vegetable garden and a raspberry patch. Also
included is a rare deeded water lot that extends from the high water mark out into the bay.
